The seven questions, four regimes, Invictus sleeves, Bloomberg stack, diagnostic spine, and historical laboratory — on one page. Educational reconstruction, not advice.

Seven questions

  1. 01

Where are we in the short-term debt cycle?

Recovery, expansion, late expansion, tightening or peak, contraction, trough. Labels describe balance sheets. They are not a clock.

  2. 02

What is the central bank doing, and why?

Policy rate, real rate, balance-sheet stance, and the market-implied path. These set discount rates and liquidity.

  3. 03

What is inflation doing relative to growth?

The four boxes: Goldilocks, reflation, stagflation, disinflationary slowdown. Surprise relative to what was priced is the only number that matters.

  4. 04

What is the yield curve telling us?

Slope and shape need a causal story: bull or bear steepener, flattener, inversion. The same spread change can mean opposite things.

  5. 05

    What is the dollar doing?

Currency moves alter sterling returns and global liquidity. Listing currency is not economic exposure.

  6. 06

What is the market pricing that reality has not confirmed?

The gap is where risk and opportunity live. A coherent narrative is not a gap.

  7. 07

    What principle governs action now?

Every session ends with one if-then. Invalidation is written before size.

Four regimes

Goldilocks

Growth core

Growth rising vs expectations. Inflation falling.

Equities, credit; nominal bonds can help

Failure mode: Valuation excess, later tightening

Reflation

Growth + real assets

Growth rising. Inflation rising.

Equities, cyclicals, energy, commodities, infrastructure

Failure mode: Inflation high enough to crush multiples and duration

Stagflation

Real assets

Growth falling. Inflation rising.

Gold, commodities, inflation-linked

Failure mode: Conventional 60/40 on both sides

Disinflation

Defensive

Growth falling. Inflation falling.

High-quality nominal duration, cash — if credibility holds

Failure mode: Inflationary resolution of the long cycle

Invictus sleeves

Educational case study. Look-through equity-like weight is the mid-sixties, not the pie chart.

Growth core

43%

Wealth engine through rising-growth boxes

VWRP, IBCZ, VUAG, VFEM, MVOL

VUAG is a US concentration, not diversification. MVOL is still equity beta.

Real assets

31%

Purchasing-power protection when inflation surprises higher

SGLN, INGH, FAIG, WNRG, PAVE, AIGI

Gold has no cash flow. Listed infrastructure is still equity. Contango can drag commodities.

Defensive

16%

Limit permanent impairment in contraction or disinflation

VAGS, BHMG, IGTM

BHMG is manager-dependent, not a guaranteed crisis hedge. Duration is tactical under repression.

Thematic

10%

Small asymmetric optionality on multi-year secular shifts

DFND, NCLR, RBTX, BLKC

Capital weight is not risk weight. High vol plus high covariance can dominate the budget.

Bloomberg as meter

  • TerminalInteractive front end. Functions are instruments, not screens.
  • BQL / BQNTReproducible multi-security queries and Python research.
  • B-PIPE / BLPAPIReal-time low-latency feed into trading and risk systems.
  • Data LicenseBulk end-of-day pricing, reference, corporates, fundamentals via SFTP.
  • BVALEvaluated prices for instruments without continuous prints. Snapshot, side, type.
  • PORT / MARSPortfolio risk, TEV, VaR; full revaluation on derivatives books.
  • EMRS / EIDEntitlements across user, application, delivery point, and permission set.
  • AIM / SSEOMS / FIXBuy-side and sell-side order flow, allocation, regulatory reporting.

Diagnostic spine

Find the lowest layer known to work, then test the next layer.

  1. 01Scope / impact
  2. 02Environment / identity
  3. 03Control plane vs data plane
  4. 04Network / TLS
  5. 05Session / service startup
  6. 06Authentication
  7. 07Authorization / entitlement
  8. 08Request / subscription / delivery
  9. 09Security / field / schema
  10. 10Content / methodology / timing
  11. 11Client parse / storage
  12. 12Reproduction → resolve or evidence-complete escalation
