Signals, Cycles, Market Depth
Where Renaissance discipline meets Bridgewater cause-and-effect — and why market depth is a different question from price.
Measure the gap, map the mechanism, size the exposure, define the exit.
If-then of this hour
Simons defines a signal as a gap that survives costs and invalidation. Dalio insists on the causal chain. Bloomberg puts both onto enterprise data. Market depth is treated as a liquidity and information problem, not a candlestick pattern.

Episode three. Jim, what is a signal? Not in marketing language. In the language you would allow on a research desk.
A signal is a measurable, point-in-time, repeatable discrepancy between what is in the price and what is in the data, after costs, after look-ahead is forbidden, after delisted names are included, and after you have written the invalidation. If you cannot state the universe, the timestamp, the corporate-action treatment, and the holding period, you do not have a signal. You have a backtest costume.
I will add the causal half. Markets are discounting machines inside the economic machine. Prices move on surprises relative to what was already priced. A statistical gap without a mechanism is a temporary edge that dies when the crowding or the regime changes. A mechanism without a gap is a lecture. You need both. Measure the gap. Map the mechanism. Size to the residual risk budget. Write the exit in advance.
Most of what people call signals are incentives they have not inverted. They see a pattern because they need the pattern to be true. The cure is to ask what would make you look like a fool, and to keep that list closer than the thesis.
The seven questions we use as daily operating system. One: where are we in the short-term debt cycle. Two: what is the central bank doing and why. Three: what is inflation doing relative to growth. Four: what is the yield curve telling us, with a causal story — bull or bear steepener, flattener, inversion. Five: what is the dollar doing. Six: what is the market pricing that reality has not confirmed. Seven: what principle governs action now. Jim, which of those is usually fake?
Seven, if it arrives before one through six. People start with a trade and retro-fit a principle. Also four, if slope is reported without a story. A bull steepener and a bear steepener can print the same spread change and mean opposite things for duration and credit.
On the terminal those questions are queries, not vibes. Cycle stage: PMI new orders, industrial production, payrolls, retail sales, bank lending, credit spreads. Central bank: policy rate, real-rate proxy from inflation swaps or break-evens, balance-sheet size, OIS or funds-futures path. Regime: surprise versus consensus. Curve: constant-maturity twos, tens, fives, thirties, real yields, term premium. Dollar: broad trade-weighted and the pairs that actually move sterling returns. Pricing gap: futures, swaps, option surfaces against the fundamental series. Every series with start date, end date, currency, and corporate-action treatment. Then validate. Then, and only then, compute.
Market depth is the part buy-side slides skip. A price is not the same as the ability to transact. In a funding shock, listed risk assets gap together. Bid size disappears. That is why a one-percent thematic with thirty-five vol and point-seven correlation to the core can consume more risk budget than a five-percent bond sleeve. Capital weight is a vanity metric. Risk contribution is the adult metric.
Depth is also information. A thin market can print a last price that is not a market. BVAL exists because many bonds do not have a continuous exchange price. Evaluated price, snapshot, side, lot, and methodology are different objects. If a client disputes a BVAL number, the first question is not 'is Bloomberg wrong'. The first question is whether you are looking at the same snapshot, side, and price type.
On a support desk I am trained to find the lowest layer known to work, then test the next layer. That is the same discipline as a signal pipeline: do not investigate field content while session start is unproven. Do not investigate SFTP when the request never processed.
Yes. Sequence is a form of information hygiene. Garbage in the first timestamp pollutes every derived statistic. Single source of truth: one time-aligned return matrix, one portfolio return series, NAV from that series, every risk number from that series. Weighted averages of constituent Sharpes are a type of fraud, usually accidental.
Principle of episode three. Measure the gap, map the mechanism, size the exposure, define the exit. Next: the nineteenth of August twenty twenty-six — Treasury intervention, real-yield suppression, and financial repression in real time.
